Important Information about Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95
=======================================================================
I. Installing Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95 for the first time:
1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Click on Run, then type d:\setup (where "d" is the letter
of your CD-ROM drive)
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
------*------
I.a.If you have previously installed Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95:
The Setup program will search your system for existing ScreenSaver
files. If Setup detects a previous installation, it will give you the
option of installing only the picture, sounds, and cursor files for
your new title. These files will be added to your existing \Picture,
\Sounds, and Windows\Cursors directories and the system files will be
updated with the contents of your new title.
I.b.Loading Expert ScreenSaver automatically when you start Windows 95:
During Setup, you will be given the option to start Expert ScreenSaver
automatically whenever you start Windows 95. If you choose Yes, a
Shortcut icon will be placed in the Windows 95 StartUp folder.
Every time you start Windows 95, Expert ScreenSaver will load in the
background and will be minimized on the Taskbar. (To disable this
activity, simply remove the Expert ScreenSaver Shortcut icon from the
StartUp folder).
=======================================================================
II. Uninstalling Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95:
Note: make sure you do not have Expert ScreenSaver running, otherwise
the uninstall program will not be able to delete all components.
To uninstall Expert ScreenSaver:
1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Point to Settings, then click on Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
4. Select Expert ScreenSaver from the list and click on
Add/Remove.
The Uninstall program will remove all ScreenSaver components that were
created at the time of installation, including program files, folders,
directories, and registry entries. Since some ScreenSaver files are
created after the initial installation, you must manually delete them
in order to completely remove Expert ScreenSaver from your system.
Listed below are the files you should delete for a complete uninstall:
- all .ESS files (Expert ScreenSaver Picture Collection)
- all .ETN files (Album Thumbnail image)
- all .ETI files (Main Screen Thumbnail image)
- Expscene.bmp (Temporary Wallpaper image file)
In addition, there will be a DECO_32.DLL file located in the Windows
95 System directory which you should also delete.
=======================================================================
III. Using pictures from Expert ScreenSaver 2.0 (Windows 3.1 version):
Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95 is compatible with and will display
all images and collections from older versions of the program (version
1.0 and 2.0) for Windows 3.1. When you first display a picture
collection from an older title for the first time, the thumbnail
pictures in the Album Viewer may be slightly offset. This is due to
the way Windows 95 draws its dialog boxes and should not affect the
playback of the images. Once you click on the OK button, the Album
Viewer will update the thumbnails and they will then appear as they
should. For best results we recommend that you re-install any previous
titles to Windows 95 ONLY after installing this version of the program,
then running the program to update the Thumbnail files.
* * * Important: * * *
While the Windows 3.1 version of Expert ScreenSaver will run on
Windows 95, we recommend that only use the Windows 95 version of
the program. This way you can guarantee that you can view all your
previous picture collections.
=======================================================================
IV. Video Display Adapters:
Expert ScreenSaver requires that you have a video card that can display
256 colors or higher. Most VGA and Super VGA cards on the market can
now support 256 color displays. If you are not sure, please consult
with your computer vendor.
------*------
IV.a. Windows 95 Desktop Settings:
Your Windows 95 program must be set to display 256 colors or higher
in order for the program to run. If you are running in 16 colors
or less, the program will display a message recommending that you
change your Windows 95 settings for best results. To change your
Windows 95 color palette to 256 colors:
1. Click on the Start button on the Taskbar.
2. Point to Settings, then click on Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Display icon.
4. Choose the Settings tab.
5. Choose 256 colors from the Color Palette list box.
6. Click on the Apply button, then click on OK.
Windows 95 will now run in 256 color mode. You may also use Expert
ScreenSaver in 16 million color mode, however, the images displayed
will use up more of your memory and may slow system performance.
=======================================================================
V. Windows 95 Control Panel:
Although you can change all of the settings for Expert ScreenSaver from
the program, you can also make changes to settings from the Windows 95
Control Panel/Display Properties application. Whenever Expert
ScreenSaver for Windows 95 is running, the name displayed in the
current screen saver listbox should read "Expert ScreenSaver". Any
changes you make here, including time, collection, and scrolling
message options will be updated in the main program. When you exit
Expert ScreenSaver, the listbox for screen savers will default itself
to "none".
(Another quick way of accessing Display Properties is by clicking on
the desktop with the right mouse button and selecting 'Properties'
from the menu).
=======================================================================
VI. Password Protection:
Windows 95 now controls Password Protection through the Control Panel.
If you wish to enable password protection while the ScreenSaver is
active:
1. Minimize all programs on your desktop.
2. Click on the desktop with the right mouse button and
select 'Properties' from the menu.
3. Click on the 'Screen Saver' tab.
4. Click in the 'Password protected' check box below the
Screen Saver list box.
When this feature is enabled, you will be prompted to enter a password
every time you wish to return to Windows 95 once the ScreenSaver has
activated. Please refer to your Windows 95 User Guide for more
information on system passwords.
=======================================================================
VII. Using Expert ScreenSaver with other ScreenSavers:
For best results, we recommend that you have only one active screen
saver running on your system at one time.
=======================================================================
VIII. Using Expert ScreenSaver with other Software:
When using certain software, most notably older versions of paint and
draw programs, (PageMaker 4.0, Corel Draw 3.0, Quark Express, etc.) you
may experience a change in the colors of the image you are working on
when the Wallpaper changes (palette shift). This occurs when the
Windows 256 color palette changes with the new Wallpaper image and the
software you are using does not recognize the color change. To avoid
this, simply turn off the Wallpaper changing function. Minimize, then
maximize the program you were working on and the image will then return
to its original colors. If this doesn't solve the problem, turn off
and Quit Expert ScreenSaver while you work with your application. YOUR
FILE WILL NOT BE AFFECTED, ONLY THE WAY IT IS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN
AT THE TIME.
=======================================================================
IX. Changing Cursors to Windows default:
Note that the instructions in the help file under the topic Changing
Cursors - To return cursors to the Windows Defaults are not complete.
We recommend the following steps to return a cursor to the Windows
defaults:
1. Click on the Cursors Tab in the ScreenSaver Settings window.
2. Click on Change Cursors.
3. Click on the Pointers tab in the Mouse Properties window.
4. Highlight the cursor you want to change by clicking on it.
5. Click on Use Default.
6. Click on OK or Apply for the cursor to change.
=======================================================================
X. Registering Expert ScreenSaver:
1. Insert the Expert ScreenSaver for Windows 95 CD into your
CD-ROM drive.
2. On the Taskbar click on the Start button.
3. Click on Run, then type d:\xcatalog\setup where "d" is the
letter of your CD-ROM drive. Click on OK.
4. Fill out, print and mail the Expert online registration card.
5. To run the online catalog: From the Taskbar, click on Start,
then choose Programs. Click on OnLine Catalog in the Expert
Software folder.
